HISTORY OF A FRENCH PASSION FOR LEATHER ACCESSORIES
SEOUL 2018 – LOTTE AVENUEL – Musée A la Carte ®
Accessories hold a rather special place of their own in the history of fashion. They are the indicators of social status, the mark of a personality and the very definition of style. Far from being accessory, they are essential and have today become one of the beacons of the French luxury industry.
If shoes, leather goods and gloves are so much appreciated by many a woman and are an essential part of their wardrobe, they were for a long time uniquely reserved for men, especially those in the spotlight or in positions of power.
As time goes by and women gain more and more freedom, they can no longer do without them and they have become the perfect excuse to indulge in a certain kind of extravagance.
The “History of a French Passion for Leather Accessories” exhibition provides the Korean public with the opportunity to see how much accessories have counted in the history of French fashion in a scenography specially created for this exhibition.
The common denominator of the selection presented is leather because of the primary role it plays in the fabrication of accessories. Much appreciated by craftsmen for its solidity, flexibility and long-lasting qualities, the variety and extreme richness of its textures, leather lends itself to a wide range of creative fantasy. Chosen as much for their historical importance as for their beauty, leather accessories on show here are a demonstration of the permeability of styles and the never-ending capacity of fashion to reinvent itself.
